More Hats Than Elton John Has Shoes

It’s always good to see Common get some shine. In this podcast with Pete Paphides from Times Online he talks about everything from the Ice Cube beef, performing at Paisley Park to his line of hats.

The Place Where You Never Find A Dancefloor Empty

29 11 2007

Big sis reminded me that the Sunshine State duo will be playing the Supermarket tonight, Thursday, November 29. So I thought I would post this old video footage. If I’m not mistaken this was their first performance together. Although it was billed as a James Bryant show, it was basically a Sunshine State show from beginning to end.

Over the last year they’ve made an album and quite a bit of noise, thanks to Do Right’s big man, John Kong. And it all started with the Soul On Ice crew who put this show on back in May 2006. Incidentally they will be celebrating their anniversary on Friday over at Loki Lounge on King St, so big ups to them. Anyhow, if you’re looking to get the weekend started early, this event might be worth checkin out.

DJ Fase Is For The Children

29 11 2007

Hardcore Wu heads will be throwing up the W at the Ghostface/Wu Tang release party over at Andy Poolhall on Tuesday, December 4th with DJ Fase. Considering the popularity of Footworks and that this is the first full album from Wu in about 6 years, I’m quite sure that the killa bees will be out in full effect to show their love for the posse that bumrushed the industry back in 1993.

Myself, I’m really checking for Big Doe Rehab, the upcoming release from Big Ghost. In the last couple of years he’s been getting down for the crown and from what I heard so far this one will be no exception. Regardless, I will check back in after I get my earful of the Clan at a special listening party later this week.

Motown Soul

Me, the Soul On Ice crew + Jessica rolled through the motor city last weekend for the Urban Organic Music Festival. Because 3/4 of us already experienced a taste of the festival last year, we were pretty amped at the thought of actually spending a full weekend in Detroit.

There were a lot of great stories about chicken & waffles amongst other things but that will have to be saved for another day. It’s easy to say that the people we met trumped it all.Below is a video of one of the great folks of the D who was definitely a crowd favorite at the Saturday Night event with Roy Ayers. Monica Blaire is someone I’ve been checking for since the release of Exit Music: Songs with Radiohead, where she and Wajeed collaborated beautifully on a cover of “Knives Out.”

This is pretty much the only media I have up from the trip right now but even if it wasn’t It would still rank at the top of the list. Check this quick clip of Monica lighting it up on stage.
